COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – It’s Small Business Saturday, where shoppers are encouraged to shop local.
In 2010, American Express founded Small Business Saturday to help local businesses gain more customers.

The day is celebrated the Saturday after Thanksgiving and encourages people to shop at small businesses as they kick of their holiday shopping.

The day has gained a lot of attention, turning into a national movement and local business owners say it’s a great way to promote shopping local and also put money back into the local economy.

“I think it’s great when people shop locally. For instance, we have already put a new roof on our building this year, so we got that from someone local, we put new lights in, got that from someone local, we got new carpet down, that’s from someone local, but when people shop with me, that gives me money that I can put back in the economy and we want to keep Columbus looking good and doing good,” said Fashion Barn Owner, Homer Beaty.

Beaty also says that business has been very steady through Black Friday and Small Business Saturday.
