Smithville Captures First-Ever Baseball State Championship

PEARL, Miss. (WCBI) – They needed a game 3 to make it to Pearl, but no game 3 was necessary in Pearl for the Smithville Seminoles. BoQYhUBIIAAFMS8

For the first time in school history, Smithville was crowned MHSAA baseball State Champions as they defeated Cathedral in Game 2 of their 1A State Championship series, 6-2.

The Noles used a barrage of hits at the plate in the 3rd and 4th innings to pull away from the Green Wave and cruise to victory.

Senior Drew Lann was credited with the victory on the mound. The right-hander went 5 strong innings, surrendering just 4 hits and 2 runs while striking out 3. Lann also helped lead the Smithville football team to the State Championship game as their starting quarterback.

While Smithville closed the game out in the seventh, it was Tyler Hood’s magnificent double play in the sixth inning that may have sealed it for the Noles.

With no outs and the bases loaded, Hood snagged a shallow liner up the middle and doubled off the runner at second to help preserve Smithville’s lead. Cathedral would go on to score twice in the inning but it wasn’t enough.

The victory completes Smithville’s first State Championship baseball season at a 29-8 overall record. Blake Comer earned the save in the final win of the year for the Noles. He also had 2 RBI’s in the victory.

WCBI Sports was in Pearl and will have highlights and reaction from Trustmark Park coming up tonight.
