SMITHVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – It’s been more than 2 years since a powerful tornado destroyed the Smithville Baptist Church. The congregation will worship in their new facility, for the first time, later this month. When they saw the recent devastation in Moore, Oklahoma, they knew they had to help. Pastor Wes White sees it as a moral obligation. His congregation received so much aid in the wake of the April 27th 2011 tornado, he feels it’s their duty to pitch in. White and 26 church members will hit the road before dawn Wednesday (6-5) morning bound for what’s left of the Highland Baptist Church in Moore, Oklahoma. They will spend all day Thursday and Friday cleaning up. They’ve also packed up 50 Tupperwear tubs, with things like toiletries and sunscreen that they know people will need.

Folks in Smithville have a unique perspective on tornadoes. They plan to swap stories and help begin the healing process. Pastor White says, “This particular mission really has a dear place in our hearts. The phone began to ring right after the storm. As we saw the devastation, it was so similar to what we’ve gone through here, and we have a level of understanding of the loss, the grief and the pain. Smithville Baptist hopes to develop an ongoing relationship with Highland Baptist in Oklahoma.
