SMITHVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) — A man who has played a major role in rebuilding the town and its school is given a special recognition today.

After Smithville School was destroyed by a tornado three years ago this weekend, Bill Steverson went to work.

He helped raise more than $400,000 toward rebuilding efforts. Today, the school paid its gratitude during an emotional ceremony as part of the town’s remembrance of the tornado’s third anniversary.

Steverson said he learned the value of public service and giving back, who was a long-time public works employee in Columbus. He told students he he hopes they carry on the spirit the town has shown in rebuilding.
