Spelling Bee Winners Flip Spots From 2012

JACKSON, Miss. — Desiree Roby, a 6th grade student from Christian Home Educators Connection, is Mississippi’s 2013 Spelling Bee Champion.

Desiree spelled the championship word dowager in the 26th round of the Bee and will advance to the 86th Annual Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., where she will compete against Spelling Bee Champions from every state in America!

The Runner-Up in the Spelling Bee is Dev Jaiswal, a 6th grade student from Winston Academy. Dev was eliminated in Round 25 with the word styptic.He was the defending state champ, winning the title last year when Roby finished as runner up.

The Mississippi Spelling Bee was broadcast live on Mississippi Public Broadcasting (MPB). MPB plans to air this exciting event again so check your local listings for the exact date and time.

Twenty-nine students from across Mississippi competed for the Mississippi Championship Spelling Bee Title. The Mississippi Association of Educators (MAE) has sponsored this event for the past five years and was honored to have Kevin Farrell, Assistant Director of Radio for MPB, as the official pronouncer for the competition.

The Mississippi Association of Educators will fund the expenditures for Desiree and one parent for the National Spelling Bee which will be televised May 28 – 30, 2013. MAE is committed to ensuring Mississippi students are represented at the national level and wishes to congratulate all the winners who participated in Tuesday’s spelling competition.
