High School Football Tour: Calhoun Academy

Calhoun Academy Cougars

CALHOUN CITY, Miss. (WCBI) – A year removed from their best season in school history, Calhoun Academy looked strong in 2013.

The Cougars finished the season with a 6-5 record but ultimately failed to make the playoffs in Tim Melton’s first full season as head coach.

This year, CA hopes it’s their year to return to the State Championship and finish the job.

“The expectations are we should have a mediocre season,” coach Melton said. “But that’s what everyone outside of our team thinks. I think with the guys’ effort and hard work in the summer we should be very competitive.”

Calhoun Academy will have a new quarterback taking the snaps this year full time in junior Scott Shankle, who coach Melton believes is going to succeed and take the Cougars to new heights.

“Scott has been running the system for three years now,” Melton said. “But now he gets to the the full time starter. He’s improved a lot in the off-season and he’s doing real well with what we’ve put in. I’m looking for big things from him as a leader on the field for us.

Calhoun Academy has a difficult schedule this season with just four true home games. One of those in week 2 where they’ll host playoff team Delta Academy. The Cougars will start the season on the road at Humphreys Academy.
