REFORM, Alabama (WCBI Sports) - Pickens County High School is preparing to defend its 1A state title this season. It was a perfect season in 2013: 15-0, and the Tornadoes have the hardware to prove it.

“It was special last year, 15-0,” senior cornerback and wide receiver Steffon McCoy said. “That was perfect.”

“It was a dream come true,” junior center Chris Cobb said. “It’s a new season. It all starts over. If we get everyone to have good team chemistry, then the season will go just fine.”

Now, it’s on to the next set of challenges.

“We’re just trying to continue what’s been set up with the tradition here at Pickens County. What we had wasn’t broke,” first-year head coach Nicholas Roberson said. “We’re going with the same philosophy of a swarming defense and the same offense, spread them out, to make some plays.”

Roberson has been an assistant with the team the past three seasons. He’s seen the team develop under former head man Patrick Plott.

“We’ve got to find our own identity,” he said. “Our identity has changed through the three years that I’ve been here. This year’s team is no different. We are younger.”

And Pickens County is moving up to 2A. It means better overall competition and some unfamiliar opponents.

“I think we’ll be ready for this move,” he said. “We don’t think it could be much harder than the region we were in in 1A with three of the four in the final rounds of the playoffs.”

The Tornadoes return eight starters on offense but lose Devonte Simon and Jermarcus Brown. Roberson says the offensive line will be the biggest strength.
