Shannon High School Red Raiders
SHANNON, Miss. (WCBI) – When you think of proud football traditions, Shannon is one school that comes to mind.
The Red Raiders have made it to the postseason 19 consecutive years with a State Championship to boast in 1996.

Lately though, it has been a rebuilding process for third year head coach Darryl Carter who still has a young team, but they’re growing up quick.
“The expectations for this year are very high because we return a lot of guys,” coach Carter said. “I came into a freshman class and they’re now juniors. We’re expecting a lot out of those guys and we’re just trying to get this thing back and rolling at Shannon.”
Last season, Shannon lost multiple games in the 4th quarter where they carried a lead.
This season, coach Carter is stressing the word ‘finish’ to his kids.
“The main thing we’ve focused on is finishing this time around,” Carter said. “It’s not that we haven’t done it here before but when we go outside or in the weight room we teach and push our kids on finishing.”
The team that returns in 2014 at Shannon is all around strong, but the defense will lead the way for the Red Raiders as the offense catches up.
“We didn’t complete a lot of drives last season,” Carter said. “We had a lot of key injuries on offense so the defense will carry us this year.
“Everybody is tired of being that guy waiting. We’re ready to be the next team. The kids take on the mentality that it’s our time now.”
Shannon starts the season at home versus Aberdeen before facing a re-match with Tupelo on September 5th.
