The Rams return five seniors and six starters to their 2013 squad, but not their head coach. Justin Hollis announced this past week that he is leaving the program to take a job at Myrtle High school. Before he left he told us about an analogy that only a Vardaman coach would come up with.
“We’re big on fundamentals. Our saying this year is we’re going to set taters. That’s kinda weird. But from around here, that’s where I got it from. We set taters so we can dig them in the fall,” Hollis said.
Well they like their sweet potatoes in Vardaman. This year they like their quarterback Chase Owen, though he’s new to the position.
“I’m confident because he’s a great human being. He’s a competitor and he works hard. I think he’s got a great attitude and I think he’s a quiet leader,” Hollis said.
It will be a lot of underclassmen on the field, but Hollis likes their work ethic.
“We’ve got a lot of young faces, but they’re talented young faces,” Hollis said. “I think we’ve got the chance to be really good in our league next year and have a chance to go a long way with these guys if they continue to work like they’re working.”
