HOUSTON, Miss. (WCBI) – Many high school boys can only dream of playing varsity football.
Senior catcher Kody Kimbrough has worked hard to be a two-sport athlete, but his focus is on baseball.
“Football came along as just something else to do. Then I got to where I love football too,” Kimbrough said.
He’s played baseball at the high school level since eighth grade. He emphasizes baseball throughout each year, even taking batting practice consistently during football season.
“It does [get stressful] sometimes. I just don’t ever get a break. I love them both. If I could play both of them in college I would.”
Kimbrough will be playing at the next level. He will play on the Northwest Rangers in the fall.
While he’s a linebacker on the gridiron, head coach Scott Gann compares him to a signal caller on the baseball field.
“He’s our go-to guy. Being the catcher, he’s kind of the quaterback of the team,” Gann said. “He kind of runs the show. As he goes we go.”
Kimbrough said he has enjoyed his three years on the varsity baseball team. He’s not looking forward to saying goodbye to his teammates.
“We stay together a lot. We hang out every weekend together. We’re just together all the time, 24-7.”
After taking down Amory in their highly-anticipated 4A playoff showdown, the Hilltoppers are preparing for their second-round series against Lewisburg, which starts Friday.
Lewisburg knocked Houston out of the playoffs in thesecond round last season.
“We got put out my Lewisburg last year. So, we’re just going to try to get them back this year.”
