STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) — The debate surrounding insurance coverage for city employees in Starkville continues.

Last week, the Starkville Board of Aldermen voted to amend the city’s health insurance policy to extend coverage to legally married couples.

Starkville Mayor Parker Wiseman filed a veto Friday. Now, the decision is back in the hands of aldermen.

Aldermen will decide Tuesday night whether to override the veto.

Wiseman believes the amendment will adversely affect employees who are not married, preventing them from providing health care for their families.

Proponents of the amendment believe extending the coverage to everyone would be in support of same-sex unions.

“I don’t think it’s good policy to exclude the opportunity for our employees to cover any of their loved ones when the city is fully capable of providing it,” Wiseman said. “It doesn’t cost us a thing.”

Five votes are needed to override Wiseman’s veto. The board meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. tomorrow.
