STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – A crafty Starkville girl, who loves helping people, is at it again. She’s spent her Summer creating bracelets for a good cause.

She snips, twists and ties. In less than three minutes, 11 year old Kaytlyn Hurst makes a bracelet to sell in support of her friend Joelle Lidner who was diagnosed with Leukemia.

“We found out that one of the girls that she goes to school with, she’s a 2nd grader, Joelle Lidner, we found out in June that she had Leukemia so there been a lot of fundraiser and Kayla just decided to switch it from St. Jude to Joelle to help out the family,” said mother Susan Hurst.

“She’s my best friend, and I like helping others,” said Kaytlyn.

And that she does. Last year Kaytlyn raised 11 hundred dollars to donate toys to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis.

“It blows my mind sometimes really, you know to think an 11 year old really takes more people into consideration something then grownups do,” added mother Hurst.

Kaytlyn says a trip to a retail giant got her started.

“Me and mom went to Walmart, we saw the bracelets thread thing so we decided ti buy it. We went home and we just started making them and twisting them so then I decided to sell them,” said Kaytlyn.

Making bracelets is just one way Kaytlyn can help others, last year she started with just bracelets alone. But this year she’s created friendship bracelets, key chains and tap bracelets.

Her mother says it’s become Kaytlyn’s summer project and she’s raised 200 dollars so far. Every day she goes to work with her mom and sells them to her customers.

“Just customers that come in, I really got some awesome customers because they come in they’ve heard about Joelle, they know Kaytlyn. They buy them for their grand daughters, people just everywhere,” said Hurst.

And at the end of the day Kaytlyn feels great!

“Never give up and never give up faith,” said Kaytlyn.

Kaytlyn is selling her bracelets at Flexsteel Outlet where her mother works. The cost of each bracelet ranges from 50 cents to a couple of dollars.
