Starkville High School Introduces New Baseball Coach

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Travis Garner said he’s getting the chance to build a program with a great history. He said he’s excited about the way athletics are embraced at Starkville High School.

It just so happens that Garner is from Starkville. He attended Starkville Academy before playing baseball at the University of Alabama. He was even with the Kansas City Royals organization for a time.

Athletic Director Stan Miller introduced Garner as the new head coach before an audience of about 20 members of the Yellow Jackets’ community. Miller praised Garner for having glowing recommendations from those he’s coached and played under.

He takes over a program that saw its first year head coach, Brian Jones, resign to take the head coaching position at Pearl High. Jones replaced Danny Carlisle who was the head man for 29 years, winning three state championships.

“I know what the program was about in the 90’s and things like that. I know Coach Carlisle did a lot for that so we’re going to try and build it back to that,” Garner said. “The opportunity that was put forth now was more about the opportunity to build a program, build a championship program, to come to a place of tradition, to come to a school system that supports athletics.”

Garner comes to SHS after most recently coaching at Northridge High School in Tuscaloosa.
