Starkville Hospitality Tax Could See An Increase

STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – It has been a huge financial success for the city of Starkville and now state lawmakers are working to re-up the hospitality tax for the college town.

State Representative Tyrone Ellis of Starkville, along with Gary Chism of Columbus, authored the bill that will guarantee continuing the 2 percent tax. House members agreed.

The bill allows Starkville to continue to receive funds from the tax on restaurants, hotels and motels.

Funds from the tax are earmarked for the Parks Department, The Convention and Visitors Bureau, The Economic Development Authority and student groups at MSU.

A separate bill, proposed by State Senator Gary Jackson of French Camp, is still working it’s way through a Senate committee.

Local lawmakers say they feel confident the tax will be approved and receive the governor’s signature.
