STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) — A Department of Homeland Security grant could help Starkville police keep a closer eye on activity in the Cotton District and purchase new vehicles.

Starkville Police Chief Frank Nichols says he wants to use the $90,000 grant to install a camera near the intersection of University Drive and Maxwell Street in the Cotton District. It’s a popular area among Mississippi State University students.

The department also wants to buy an SUV to help with enforcement of underage drinking laws and two segways to help his officers better navigate crowds during festivals and Super Bulldog weekend.

The purchases won’t cost the city any money. The grant will be reimbursed 10O%. Starkville leaders approved the request at Tuesday’s meeting.
