STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) — When cold weather comes in, it usually means it’s robbery season for law enforcement.

Starkville police say it’s especially the case for their college town, with so many students away for the holidays. But they’re prepared.

Police say they want to be proactive this time of year when so many residents are out of town.

“We will have extra officers throughout the holidays, and it’s a problem that we through the years – we know it’s coming, because if one apartment is burglarized, it’s very common that they’re going to hit 2,3,4,5 because no one’s in that area,” said Capt. Mark Ballard, Starkville police department.

It’s especially a problem for college students. Many head home for several days, leaving their apartments vacant, and targets for thieves.

“Talk to your neighbors that you trust,” Ballard said. “Have them to be very vigilant. If they see something that doesn’t look right, don’t hesitate to call the police department. That’s what we’re there for.”

While students and residents are out of town, officers say they’ll be beefing up patrols at night and early in the morning – either by foot, bike, or in their patrol cars.

“Secondly, they can utilize, the Starkville police has a close patrol program, where you can file out some paperwork, and we’ll make sure that officers come by to check on your home regularly.”

Police say the key to not becoming a victim, is to just use common sense.

Many burglaries involve cars or homes that are unsecure.

“Lock your doors on your vehicles, lock your doors on your home and activate alarms,” Ballard said. “Those are devices that are out there that we need them to utilize, and that’s a big step forward in preventing to become victim to burglary.”

Even if you stay in town for the holiday, Ballard says it’s still important to secure your items.

He says to hide your valuables, lock your car, and park in busy, well-lit places.
