State Lawmaker Costs Top $7 Million

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – Mississippi spent nearly $7.5 million (click below for full report) for salaries and expenses of state lawmakers during the 11 months that ended in early April.

That breaks down to nearly $5.2 million for the House of Representatives and $2.3 million for the Senate.

The figures are in a new report from the state auditor’s office.

The report covers expenses from May 4, 2012, the end of that year’s regular legislative session; through April 7, 2013, the end of this year’s session.

When all legislative seats are filled, the House has 122 members and the Senate has 52. There were several vacancies during the past year because of deaths or resignations.

The report shows that lawmakers who live farther from Jackson generally were compensated more because they were paid for more miles driven.
