ALICEVILLE, Ala. (WCBI) — Straight-line winds from Sunday night’s storm have damaged an Aliceville, Alabama home.

Several large trees toppled over the house, while the homeowners inside rushed to get to a safe place.

Fortunately they weren’t hurt.

The homeowners tell WCBI insurance will cover the cost of the damage, but the home still has sentimental value.

Dean and Jean Lewis built their Aliceville home more their 40 years ago.

The front of it doesn’t seem to have a lot of storm damage. The back yard though, looks like an obstacle course.

“I couldn’t believe it because I love working in my yard, and I had a pretty yard, but it’s not pretty anymore,” Jean said.

“We love our trees, and most of them are gone now,” Dean said.

Now, many of those trees that surrounded the home have fallen inside of it.

It all happened so quickly, the couple says they didn’t have enough time to get scared.

“I came heading towards the bathroom in the middle of the house and hollered for her to come, and she didn’t come. She didn’t come, but she went around the inside of the house and got there, and by the time we got there it was over,” Dean said. “It was that quick. I mean, quick.”

Jean was cleaning up in the kitchen. Dean was all the way in the bedroom. Both of them were just feet away from where several trees fell into their home.

“I was running for my life I thought,” Jean said. “I went through the dining room because I didn’t want to go through the den because I knew trees were falling. You could hear them bang, bang, bang, falling.”

The Lewis’ say they’re just grateful they weren’t hurt. It was a miracle they were safe.

“God was with us for sure,” Jean said.

“He sure was,” Dean said.

The couple says they’ll be renting a friend’s house for the next couple of months while they redo their home.

They also have family nearby.
