MAYHEW, Miss. (WCBI) — East Mississippi Community College wants to invest in its future students.

The school is introducing young women to careers in science and technology as part of an annual conference.

Hundreds of these area high school students are preparing for a future in science, technology, engineering and math.

“Most of the career fields in the sciences and engineering field are male dominated, and we know that a majority of the households in the future will be compromised mainly of female heads of householders,” said Brenda Wilson, East Mississippi Community College. “We want to give these young ladies a fresh start, so that they know they can make it for themselves, as well as their families.”

West Point High School junior Chelsea Rape already has her sights set on a biomedical science degree.

“I just really want to help people,” Rape said. “I really want to be able to give them new things that they can use, like if they’re disabled, then something that can help them out. They do prosthetics and they do medical equipment.”

Wilson says it’s important for more women to get involved in these fields, since that’s where the jobs are.

“We need people who are well trained, highly skilled, especially technically skilled, so they can take on the new jobs that are coming on the scene,” Wilson said.

Not only do they need to have the skill to do the job, but passion for it as well.

“The day we live in now, it’s important for girls to understand that they can be anything that they want, that if that’s your God given gift, then you should pursue it to the very fullest,” said dual-enrollment student Shelley Rae Edwards.

EMCC has been hosting this conference for more than 20 years.
