JACKSON — Tennessee authorities say the suspect in the slaying of a Mississippi mayoral candidate has been released to Mississippi authorities.

Shelby County sheriff’s spokesman Chip Washington tells The Associated Press that Mississippi authorities took custody of Lawrence Reed on Wednesday afternoon.

Reed is suspected in the death of Clarksdale, Miss., mayoral candidate Marco McMillian.

Reed had been in the Shelby County jail since being released from a Memphis hospital. He was taken to the Regional Medical Center in Memphis after wrecking McMillian’s car on Feb. 26.

McMillian wasn’t in the car. His body was found the next day in rural Coahoma County, Miss.

The case has received widespread attention because McMillian’s campaign says he may have been the first viable, openly gay candidate for office in Mississippi
