Tour Shows off Trotter Makeover

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — A worn Trotter Convention Center in downtown Columbus is showing signs of a bright new makeover.

And contractors sand city leaders say they still expect the $2.2 million dollar renovation to be completed by the end of the year.

During a tour Thursday, city leaders showed off new lighting, sound and video system, floors, walls and other work that are part of the makeover for the downtown facility that has been the centerpiece of everything from small conferences to weddings and concerts for the last 30 years.

“We haven’t run into major issues, just a few items we have do and came about. We got it cleaned up and it hasn’t thrown everything out of place or anything like that. We are still looking good on schedule and materials,” said architect Major Andrews IV, who has been overseeing the project with J5 Broaddus and the city as co-contractors.

The city originally hoped to have the work done by this fall but that date moved after original bids came in well over budget, forcing the city to act as its own contractor, bidding out individual work individually.

That produced enough savings to keep the work under budget, including the addition of an elevator.

The work is being paid for by a loan that will be repaid through Trotter receipts and tax payments from Columbus Light and Water.

The Trotter is booked for almost every weekend next year, starting in early January.
