TUPELO – The Tupelo Public School District has begun hosting a series of orientation sessions to help students and parents prepare for next school year.

The sessions are primarily designed for students who will be at a new school in 2013-14, but some of them are also geared toward those who will remain at the same building.

“The purpose is to orient the students and family members to what is offered at the school and to hopefully make the transition as smooth as possible,” said TPSD Community Liaison Mary Ann Plasencia.

Sessions for kindergarten through second grade schools will be held today, and those for third to fifth – grade schools are on Feb. 26. Both include building tours throughout the school day and formal events from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. with presentations, activities and introduction of teachers. Lawhon’s event also will include second grade.

The Early Childhood Education Center will have sessions on Feb. 26 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on Feb. 28 from noon to 6 p.m. Milam has already had its orientation.

Parents will not need to take home extensive registration packets this year, as the district is working to implement a system that will allow parents and guardians to register children for school online.

Each school has different activities planned. For instance, Lawhon will have a “Big Top Bash” with face-painting, hat-making and a photo booth. Joyner will have events for students involving its science lab and computer lab, among other things.
