COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – He was a role model for many in the community. David Gibbs passed away last Sunday just days after he had submitted a letter of resignation due to health reasons.

“He was like a person that you could ask anything and he could pretty much give you an answer,” said his son Karl Gibbs.

Karl Gibbs says he will miss his father’s advice and will remember him for his compassion for others.

“He taught me to learn all that I can about anything that I do,” added Karl.

David Gibbs served 20 years in the legislature and two terms on Clay County’s Board of Supervisors. His involvement in politics, however, did not keep him from spending time with his only son.

“We were out hunting and we came to a spot where there was a lot of thorns in it and he told me, he said this is just like life and I’m like what are you talking about daddy because I was like 9 or 10 years old,” said Karl.

The father told his son, in life, you have to watch where are going.

“And I was listening to him walking and sure enough I got stuck,” added karl.

Now, as he passes those life lessons to his 16-year old son, Karl reflects on the special bond that he shared with his father.

“I love him and I appreciate everything he did for me and I wouldn’t want to have any other father but him,” said Karl.

Karl Gibbs says he aspires take over his father’s position in District 36.
