TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — It’s a dream come true for a 6-year-old Northeast Mississippi boy who has battled cancer for half of his life.

A private Christian school wanted to do something special for the young man who has displayed the strength and perseverance of superheroes in his courageous fight. Thursday, that something special was delivered.

Three years ago, Bo Carter was diagnosed with leukemia. At the time, his dad, Scott, was on staff at Tupelo Christian Preparatory School. Scott had just recovered from a stroke when Bo was diagnosed.

The school rallied around the family.

“The first thing when we found out the news about Bo, they gathered around us and prayed for us then they just loved us and walked with us through the entire journey,” Scott and Michelle Carter, Bo’s parents, said of the school and community’s response.

It was a three-year journey of numerous trips to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, where Bo underwent treatment that included chemo, bone marrow aspiration and other procedures. This past week, he was declared cancer free.

For as long as anyone can recall, Bo has wanted to go to Disneyworld, so TCPS held fundraisers and the Make-A-Wish Foundation got involved.

Bo is also a huge fan of superheroes, so a school-wide assembly included some well-known characters. Bo played the role of Batman and was able to help save the day after The Joker stole a lunchbox.

After everything calmed down, Tupelo Mayor Jason Shelton set the stage.

“On behalf of a very grateful city we just want to thank you for saving the day,” Shelton said.

Then, Bo found out he and his family would be going to Disneyworld.

As fellow superheroes and friends congratulated Bo, his mom and dad reflected on preparations for the upcoming trip.

“We have three days in Disney, two days in Universal and a day at Seaworld and from what I hear, we will be staying at Give Kids the World and it is almost as magical as Disney itself,” Michelle Carter said.

They also shared what they have learned through this three-year journey.

“Romans 8:28 says God works all things together for good for those that love Him and are called according to His purpose. It’s easy to look at our situation, circumstances and it looks hopeless, but we can’t look at those things, we have to trust God’s word and trust Him and believe that if He’s allowed it, He’s going to work it all for good,” the couple said.

All seven members of the Carter family leave Dec. 27 for their trip of a life time. By the way, TCPS students have already raised $1,000 for a future Make-A-Wish recipient.
