TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – A Tupelo Church has decided to terminate its 60 year relationship with the Boy Scouts of America at the end of the year. The membership of Harrisburg Baptist church voted overwhelmingly  tonight  to not renew it’s sponsorship of Boy Scout Troop 85 and Cub Scout Pack 85. The decision comes  in response to the recent change approved by the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America on May 23 which said “no youth may be denied membership in the Boy Scouts of America on the basis of sexual orientation or preference alone.”

Harrisburg says the Baptist Faith and Message states that Christians should oppose all forms of sexual immorality including homosexuality and Southern Baptists consistently have expressed their opposition to the normalization of homosexual behavior in American culture. Harrisburg intends to honor its commitment to the Boy Scouts until the end of the year and then it intends to take part in a new faith based organization that is forming as an alternative to the Boy Scouts. Harrisburg had sponsored Troop 85 since 1953.
