Tupelo, Miss (WCBI) – Mississippi residents have a chance this weekend to take an important step in the fight against a rising crime.

The Attorney General’s office is sponsoring the 8th annual “Shred Day”. It allows people to bring up to five boxes of sensitive documents to drop off points.

Those documents are then shredded free of charge so they can’t get into the hands of criminals who will often rummage through trash to steal someone’s identity.

The location in Tupelo was busy throughout the day as locals took advantage of the service. Asst. Attorney General Bridgette Wiggins says that everyone needs to be careful of what they throw away.

“Sometimes we forget that when we sit down at the end of the month to pay our bills, we tear off that stub to put in the envelope to send to our creditor, and then we throw that other piece in the trash, we still have to remember that still has important information on it, still has account information, name, address.”

Shred Day is taking place at seven locations throughout the state this weekend.
