TUPELO, Miss. – (WCBI) Tupelo City Councilmen have given the green light to construction of a new police headquarters. They unanimously approve a $7.9 million dollar contract for the new police headquarters.

The new police station will put most of the operations of the department under one roof for the first time in decades. For years, police administration, investigators and officers have worked out of four different locations.

While the training academy and PAL building won’t be affected, new headquarters are long overdue.

“Our citizens, when they come to our administrative building, instead of being sent from central location down on Front street to administrative offices on Court street where detectives are, they’re not going to be running back and forth, it will be kind of like a one stop shop.” Chief Bart Aguirre, Tupelo Police Department.

Total cost for the headquarters, once you factor in items such as furniture and other necessities is 9 point 9 million dollars. ground breaking could take place in a month or so. Once construction starts, it will take about 16 months to finish.
