TUPELO, Miss. – (WCBI) The city of Tupelo has moved forward with an energy saving contract.

At Tuesday night’s city council meeting by a 5-2 vote they approved a deal with Schneider Electric.

The $5.3 million contract will go to replace the old lighting at 27 athletic fields as well as lights at more than 20 city buildings. The 20-year contract is expected to save the city $141,000 a year, for a $2.8 million savings over the length of the contract.

Tupelo Mayor Jason Shelton believes paying a contractor is better than the city doing it internally.

“We’ve weighed the pros and cons on this looked at the energy savings, the commitment to going green, the enhancement to the product of our sports facilities and then the energy savings with our twenty something buildings in the city of Tupelo it just makes sense to go forward with this project at one time rather than taking a chance on the city of Tupelo having the discipline or the ability to it themselves over an extending period of time.”>

The Tupelo Convention and Visitors Bureau approved 500-thousand dollars for the project.
