TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — A Tupelo man is charged with aggravated assault after a shooting Tuesday evening.

27-year-old Kaz Devon Jenkins turned himself into police today and made his initial appearance in Justice Court.

He is accused of shooting 23-year-old Dominique Carruthers during an argument Tuesday evening in the 3200 block of Beasley Drive.

Police were called to the scene around 8 p.m. and found Carruthers lying in the street with a non-life-threatening injury.

Jenkins claims he was firing in self defense, and police are still investigating the incident. Detectives say it always helps when witnesses come forward right after an incident, instead of waiting.

“Unfortunately we didn’t have a lot of information the night of the incident that I have now that I have actually gotten in the last hour that would have helped us a lot the night of the incident to piece this together, and have more truth available,” Det. Scott Floyd with the Tupelo Police Department said.

Bond for Jenkins was set at $15,000.

Police say Jenkins has no prior criminal history.
