TUPELO, Miss. – (WCBI) A somber day brightened by the promise of a stronger, better community. That’s how Tupelo remembered the six month anniversary of a devastating tornado.

Saint Luke United Methodist was one of the churches most heavily damaged by the April 28th twister, but today it hosted a ceremony to demonstrate the strength of rebuilding.

Mayor Jason Shelton spoke of how far the city has come and vision for its future. Former Miss Mississippi Chelsea Rick also was on hand. And 13-year-old 8th grader Shields Haire, whose t-shirts have turned into a fund raiser for relief effort,s was recognized.

“I don’t think we would have the level of progress we have today without those faith-based groups doing all the work they did and continue to do,” says Tupelo Mayor Jason Shelton.

“It was really nothing other than the Tupelo spirit that definitely has gotten everyone through and that is apparent here today,” says Former Miss Mississippi Chelsea Rick.

The high school group Tupelo Strong also announced it is working on a documentary chronicling not only the storm but also the recovery.
