TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — Voters in Tupelo will decide the fate of a 44 million dollar bond package for the city’s public school system.

School board members are being briefed on the proposed bond issue during their regular meeting this afternoon.

The bond package will not call for a tax hike.

TPSD Superintendent Dr. Gearl Loden says the money is needed to fix issues such as old roofs on some of the schools,  update the district’s bus fleet, add more classrooms at several schools and convert unused space at Milam Elementary to usable space for students and teachers.

The last bond issue passed by Tupelo voters was in 1999.  The district will hold a series of town hall style meetings to inform the public about the scope of the bond package.

The election will take place April 28.
