Two Sentenced for Robbery, Death Cases Reset

OKTIBBEHA COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — Two Starkville teenagers are sentenced to 14 years in prison for armed robbery.

Darius Hill, 18, and Derrick Hill, 17, were sentenced this week in Oktibbeha County Circuit Court for their roles in the December 2010 armed robbery of the New Lite Grocery on Highway 12 in Starkville. They also must pay $2,612 in restitution and fines.

Two suspects entered the store armed with a shotgun and wearing trash bags over their heads. They snatched money and ran.

Four people originally were charged in the case.

Meanwhile, three major death-related cases involving Mississippi State University students are continued.

Jackson residents Trent Crump, Duntae Harvey and Mason Perry Jones, who were all 21 at the time of their arrest, could go to trial next spring for capital murder. They were charged with the March shooting death of 21-year-old MSU student John Sanderson in a student dorm.

Investigators have said Sanderson was hot in the chest and abdomen with a small-caliber handgun in what may have been a drug-related incident. The three suspects and Sanderson all had prior arrest records.

In a separate case, 21-year-old Lance Kennedy’s case was reset for the winter term. He was charged with possession and sale of heroin, cocaine, Xanax and marijuana after 21-year-old MSU student Teresa Veal died of a cocaine and heroin overdose in his Dawgs Landing apartment in February.

And finally, 19-year-old Austin Poole was scheduled for an Oct. 29 trial on six counts of aggravated DUI. The charges stem from a May accident that killed 19-year-old Treasure Huffman and injured five others. Poole ran a stop sign on Oktoc Road and the Ford Explorer he was driving crashed into trees and overturned.

None of the passengers were wearing seat belts.
