OXFORD, Miss. (WCBI) — This weekend more than 2,000 students with the University of Mississippi gave something back to the Oxford and Lafayette County communities.

It was the fourth annual UM BIG EVENT where students volunteered to clean up around the community, including raking leaves for private residents and schools.

Senior Madison Coburn was one of the coordinators.

“We have around 2000 volunteers come out,” Coburn said. “We had 2,400 actually sign up, come out on a Saturday morning and they go out to different community service projects within the community and work just a couple of hours, just to say thank you to our Oxford and Lafayette residents for giving so much to this university.”

Coburn says the projects were submitted by people in the community through online and phone requests.

She says they also work closely with the city to help with roadside cleanup projects.

Coburn says BIG EVENT projects are common at universities across the country.
