VERONA, Miss. (AP) – United Furniture Industries is the winning bidder for the former Lane Furniture Industries plant in Verona.

United offered $1.45 million for the 475,000-square-foot facility, along with 90 acres in the Tupelo Lee Industrial Park South.

A federal bankruptcy judge approved the sale.

The property is one of 17 properties in Mississippi, North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia belonging to the former Furniture Brands International, which filed for bankruptcy protection in September 2013.

Doug Hanby, United’s chief financial officer, says the company will use it as a manufacturing facility for stationary furniture and hopes to open it during the first quarter of next year.

He did not say how many workers United will hire.

United employs about 1,500 people in Northeast Mississippi, with plants in Nettleton and Amory.
