United Blood Services today announced a critical appeal for type O positive and RH negative ( O negative, A negative, B negative) blood donors. The weather combined with the flu/cold season has caused numerous blood drive and donor appointment cancellations.

United Blood Services has less than a one-day supply of blood types O positive, O negative, A negative and B negative. Currently, there are 121 hospitals orders for type O, 8 orders for type B negative and 33 orders for type A negative waiting to be filled.

The Tupelo Center is located at 4326 S. Eason Blvd. Donors may call 662-842-8871 or visit www.UnitedBloodServices.org to make a convenient appointment to donate.

For those who hesitate to travel, bloodmobiles are out in the community and also open to the public. By calling the number above or going to www.bloodhero.com, donors can inquire about blood mobile locations.

“Every 2-to-3 seconds in this country, someone needs blood. And you never know when you or someone you love will be the one. We all expect blood to be available when we need it, but only a few of those who can give actually roll up their sleeves. It’s time for everyone to get involved!” Hope Schiele, Satellite Center Director said.

Volunteer blood donors must be at least 16 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health. Additional height/weight requirements apply to donors 22 and younger, and donors who are 16 must have signed permission from a parent or guardian.
