UNION CO. Miss. (WCBI) — A Union County woman has been charged with culpable negligent homicide and leaving the scene of a fatal accident in the death of Union County Sheriff’s Deputy Clinton Frazier.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation says Crystil M. Byers, 27, of 1286 Highway 178 West, Lot 175 has been charged after an investigation by MBI agents, in conjunction with the New Albany Police Department.

The preliminary investigation indicates Byers caused the crash killing Deputy Frazier and left the scene of the wreck.

Following an initial appearance, Byers was held on $375,000 bond at the Pontotoc County Jail.

Sheriff Jimmy Edwards says Frazier was on patrol on Highway 178 when he spotted a car with a headlight and taillight out. He tried to stop the car but it fled westbound. Byers apparently was driving the vehicle and when she topped a hill, tried to turn into a driveway to hide from the pursuing deputy.

The deputy topped the hill and swerved to avoid Byers’ car, causing him to crash into an embankment and flip.

Edwards and the MBI say Byers fled the scene.

Meanwhile visitation and funeral services have been set for Frazier.

Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Saturday at United Funeral Home at 700 Highway 15 South in New Albany. The funeral is 2 p.m. Sunday at New Albany Presbyterian Church, 605 Highway 15 South (

The funeral is open to the public.
