Update on North Mississippi Road Projects

TUPELO, MISS., Friday, May 17, 2013— As the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) continues to provide a safe, efficient and sustainable intermodal transportation network for the traveling public, below is a list of project updates in North Mississippi’s District One.

“In an effort to provide the public with timely information regarding current transportation improvement projects, MDOT offers this list of projects, detailing current work taking place across North Mississippi,” said Northern District Transportation Commissioner Mike Tagert.

U.S. Highway 45 Widening Project near Brooksville

A project is underway on U.S. 45 from an area near Brooksville to Carson Road in Lowndes and Noxubee counties. The project will be a grade, drain, bridge and paving project to upgrade approximately 6.4 miles of roadway where two new lanes will be constructed parallel to the existing lanes. This project was let in January of 2011 and awarded to Phillips Contracting Co., Inc., of Columbus. This project has a contract amount of $17,977,057 and has a projected completion date of July 2013. The project is approximately 70 percent complete.

State Route 6 Paving Project in Pontotoc and Lee Counties

A paving project on relocated SR 6 from SR 342 in Pontotoc County to U.S. 45 south of Tupelo in Lee County, is approximately 55 percent complete. This project was let in April 2012 with a projected completion date of June 2014. The contractor is APAC-Mississippi, Inc. and has a contract amount of $26,063,700. This is a four-lane section and will tie the relocated SR 6 from SR 342 in Pontotoc County to U.S. 45 in Tupelo.

U.S. Highway 78 Upgrade in Union County

A project to upgrade a section of U.S. 78 to current interstate standards, from just west of SR 30 to just east of SR 15 in New Albany, is currently under construction. The contractor for this project is Hill Brothers Construction Company of Falkner and has a contract amount of $18,996,585. This project began in March 2012 and is expected to be complete in November 2013. The project is approximately 55 percent complete.

U.S. Highway 45 Cable Barrier Project in Lee County

A project is underway to install cable barrier on U.S. 45 from Shannon to Saltillo in Lee County. This project includes inlet repair, raising the grade of the median from Green street to McCullough Boulevard and installation of the cable barrier. This project was let in September 2012 and awarded to Simmons Erosion Control, Inc. of Lake. The project has a contract amount of $3,448,494 and a projected completion date of August 2013. The project is approximately 10 percent complete.

State Route 25 Grading Project in Monroe County

A project is underway on SR 25 from just south of Becker to U.S. 278 in Monroe County. This project is a grade, drain and bridge project to construct approximately five miles of two-lane roadway. It was let in September 2012 and awarded to Eutaw Construction, Co., Inc., of Aberdeen. This project has a contract amount of $17,342,740 and has a projected completion date of May 2015. The project is approximately 15 percent complete.

U.S. Highway 45 Paving Project in Lowndes County

A paving project on U.S. 45 was let in February 2013 from Carson Road to four miles south of U.S. 82 in Lowndes County. The project will involve paving the recently completed grading section in the southbound lanes and construction of new bridges, widening the existing lanes and shoulders as well as paving the northbound lanes. This project was awarded to Phillips Contracting Co., Inc., of Columbus and has a contract amount of $17,962,816 with a projected completion date of May 2015. Work has just started on this project.

State Route 15 Paving Project in Union County

A paving project on SR 15 was let in January 2013 from the north city limits of New Albany to the Tippah County line in Union County. The project includes paving the recently completed grading section in the northbound lanes and construction of new bridges, widening the existing lanes and shoulders, as well as paving the southbound lanes. This project was awarded to Rogers Group, Inc., of Tupelo and has a contract amount of $16,080,981 with a projected completion date of November 2014. Work has just started on this project.

Interstate 269 in Desoto County

Work is currently underway on the first section of I-269 in Desoto County. Joe McGee Construction Company, Inc. of Lake was awarded the $39,998,460.65 contract for construction of a portion of I-269. This project is approximately 1.9 miles in length, from just east of SR 305 to 1700 feet east of the Coldwater River. Work will include clearing, earthwork, bridge construction, and drainage features. The paving work will be let under a separate contract in the future. The contractor is currently constructing the roadway embankment on the west end of the Coldwater River Bridge. The bridge substructures for “Bridge A” underpass of local road and “Bridge B” over the Coldwater River are also under construction. The project is approximately 16 percent complete with approximately 13 percent of the contract time elapsed and an expected completion date of September 2014.

Interstate 269 in Marshall County

Work is currently underway on the first section of I-269 in Marshall County. Tanner Construction Company, Inc. of Ellisville has been awarded the $19,524,520 contract for construction of the first leg of I-269. This project is approximately 3.1 miles long and goes from just south of SR 302 to the Tennessee state line. Work will include clearing, earthwork, bridge construction, and drainage features. The paving work will be let under a separate contract in the future. The contractor currently has three bridge crews working on the bridges spanning SR 302, Wingo Road and the Nonconnah Creek bridges. Earthwork operations are complete. The project is approximately 71 percent complete with an expected completion date of October 2013. In Mississippi, I-269 will begin at the intersection of I-55 and I-69 north of Hernando, cross Highway 78 near Byhalia and continue northeast to the Tennessee state line. This project is one section of the planned nationwide I-69 project.

Interstate 269 in Marshall County

Work is currently underway on the third section of I-269 in Marshall County. Eutaw Construction Company, Inc. of Aberdeen has been awarded the $31,999,237 contract for construction of the third leg of I-269. This project is approximately 0.8 miles long and goes from just east of Mason Road to Station 835+00 near the intersection of U.S. 78 and I-269. Work will include clearing, earthwork, bridge construction, and drainage features. The paving work will be let under a separate contract in the future. The contractor is currently driving piles, installing pipes, installing Erosion Control and executing earthwork operations. The project is approximately 8 percent complete with an expected completion date of October 2014. In Mississippi, I-269 will begin at the intersection of I-55 and I-69 north of Hernando, crosses Highway 78 near Byhalia and continues northeast to the Tennessee state line. This project is one section of the planned nationwide I-69 project.

From just east of the Coldwater River to just north of Highway 78, this project is one of the nationwide I-69 projects. Start date: Fall 2012; Project Completion Date: June 2015; Estimate: $38,952,920; Contractor: Hill Brothers Construction Company.

Interstate 269 in Desoto County

From I-55 to Station 240+00, this project is one of the nationwide I-69 projects. Start date: Spring 2013; Project Completion Date: May 2015; Estimate: $30,195,143; Contractor: Eutaw Construction Company.

Interstate 269 in Desoto County

From Station 240+00 to Station 525+00, this project is one of the nationwide I-69 projects. Start date: Spring 2013; Project Completion Date: November 2016; Estimate: $56,823,653; Contractor: Tanner Construction Company.

Interstate 55 in Tate & Desoto County

Lehman-Roberts Company of Memphis, Tennessee was awarded a contract to mill and overlay a section of I-55 from the Panola/Tate County Line to Love. Estimate: $25,248,387; Completion Date: November 2013.

Highway 7 Bridge Replacement

Work is underway to replace the bridge on Highway 7 in Lafayette County over the Tallahatchie River. L&A Contracting Company was awarded the contract.
