NEW ALBANY, Miss. (WCBI) – Thanks to the efforts of hard working volunteers, a Mississippi based organization is closer to it’s goal of providing one-million meals for starving children around the world.

It was a volunteer operation, but it would make any assembly line manager proud. These folks gathered at Fredonia Baptist Church in New Albany to prepare 47,000 meals, which will be shipped to starving children around the world.

“The meals are fund-raised for 25-cents a meal. We bring all the raw ingredients here to be packaged by the volunteers. They package the meals and we take them back to our warehouse. And from our warehouse we accumulate enough meals for a shipment,” says Pat Ware of Stop Hunger Now.

Saturday’s event was spearheaded by Krystin Nowicki of Pontotoc  who in 2010 started Million Meals. She raised the money and organized the volunteers for this event.

“There’s a  statistic that says every six seconds a child dies from hunger and we really want to just break that statistic. It just breaks our heart and we just want to get of that,” says Nowicki.

And Nowicki is pleased that Fredonia Baptist Church  provided the facility and some of the manpower.

“And we just had overwhelming support from the deacon body here at the church and the pastor to pull this off and put it together and you never know until you actually have the event how it’s going to go so it’s just amazing to see this morning how much and how willing the people are,” says Nowicki.

It may seem amazing that 25 cents can purchase a meal for a starving child overseas. But Ware says these are not the kind of meals that you and I can eat on a regular basis.

“For a malnurished child who doesn’t eat on a regular basis this is life saving. But for somebody like you or me, I would lose a lot of weight and I would be looking pretty sick if I ate these meals on a regular basis,” says Ware.

Ware says he does not yet know where the meals packed by the Fredonia volunteers will end up. That will be determined at a later time.

Nowicki says thanks to this weekend’s event, Million Meals has reached the 370-thousand mark.
