NEW HOPE, Miss. (WCBI) — Experts preach it all the time, a fire plan at home can save your life.  A New Hope family is living proof it’s true. When the Dyer family went to bed Tuesday night, little did they know their possessions would soon be in ashes.

“I woke up and saw my room was illuminated,” says Trace Dyer.

This is where 12 year old Trace Dyer woke up to find the foot of his bed was on fire. That’s when Trace went into action.

“I grabbed a towel and tried to put I out with myself but I couldn’t so I went and got my dad,” says Trace Dyer.

“He was very calm. He ‘said daddy my bed is on fire’,” says Heath Dyer.

Heath quickly went to the kitchen for some water, but when he returned, the fire was out of control.

“The mattress was fully involved and it was already climbing the walls,” says Heath Dyer.

Heath his wife Dawn and three children knew they had to get out.

Six years of home fire drills paid off.

“We had to draw at a fire safety plan for our house for his class so it was kind of fresh on our minds,” says Heath Dyer.

The Dyers know the fire plan saved their lives, but they also believe they had help from something more powerful.

“If you ask me it was God,” says Trace Dyer.

“Trace saved everybody in our house. I’m super proud of him. He kept calm, he kept cool, got everybody up, got everybody out,” says Heath Dyer.

As the family rebuilds their lives, they say they are thankful for the plan they made long ago.

They say the cause of fire was from an electrical fire in a bedroom outlet.

If you would like to help the family, donations are being accepted at The Industrial Fire Protection on Gardner Blvd. in Columbus, MS.

BancorpSouth also has a bank account set up for the family.
