ACKERMAN, Miss. (WCBI) — It was ten years ago when French Camp Police Chief lost his life in the line of duty.

Wednesday, family and friends gathered together to see a highway sign dedicated in his name.

It’s an emotional day for Penny Lucas and her son Kyle as they listen to stories of how Anthony Lucas impacted lives in the community.

On February 5, 2005, Lucas was fatally shot in Weir after assisting Ackerman police and Choctaw County deputies in arresting a teenager.

His wife Penny says even though it’s been a decade, she’s still overwhelmed by the amount of support from the community.

“I know that he wasn’t forgotten. I know he’ll never be forgotten because of the things that he did for our community. Things he did for his probationers and especially all of us in the family,” says Penny Lucas.

Kyle says growing up without his father is difficult, but is proud to see his legacy living on.

“I was five years old when he was murdered so I didn’t spend a lot of time with my dad but I’ve seen changes in the community and in the county even in the state actually because of him,” says Kyle Lucas.

Transportation Commissioner, Mike Tagert says dedicating a piece of a highway in Anthony’s honor is a small token compared to his sacrifice.

“It’s a fitting tribute to dedicate and to name our public assets after public servants particularly those that have lost their life in the line of duty. Our law enforcement community is constantly nationally under criticism and this is a great opportunity to remind all of us just how important they are to our community,” says Mike Tagert.

As people drive along Anthony Lucas Highway, the Lucas family hopes it pays tribute to his life of serving.

Following the ceremony, the new signs were placed along the highway.
