TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – A Tupelo business has become the first participant in the city’s new Adopt a Park program.

The Parks and Recreation Department announced that the Tupelo employees of Leggett and Platt, a global company with 200 factories and 20-thousand employees, has adopted Veterans Memorial Park. It’s a program that has been used by other park systems as a way to enhance parks and get volunteers involved in the park system.

“We’ll come out here on a regular basis. We’ll clean up. We’ll landscape. We’ll do whatever we need to do to make the veterans proud to have this facility in their honor. This is all volunteer labor. We’ve had approximately fifty of our employees volunteer on their time to come out here and take care of the park,” says Stuart McKell of Leggett and Platt.

McKell has a special reason for choosing Veterans Memorial Park. He purchased a plaque which is on display there  honoring his two grandfathers who both fought in World War Two and his father who was a Vietnam veteran. There were veterans on hand for the ceremony who say they appreciate  Leggett and Platt adopting the park. The city hopes more companies and organizations will follow it’s lead.
