OXFORD, Miss. (WCBI)–The University Medical Center doctor credited with curing an infant of aids says the next step is expanding testing for the deadly virus in expectant mothers. Dr. Hannah Gay told honor students prenatal testing is key to stopping HIV in infants.  She says early intervention drastically increases a child’s chance of survival

“That is the biggest focus of my job here in Mississippi is to prevent the transfer of HIV from mother to infant   What we know is if we can treat the mom throughout the pregnancy and treat her well the risk of the baby being infected drops down to less than one percent.”

Hannah and her team received worldwide acclaim for treating a newborn with an aggressive drug therapy which killed the HIV virus.  That child remains negative to this day.
