MONTOGOMERY, Ala. (WCBI)  –  An Alabama lawmaker wants to make gun ownership a fundamental right in the state’s constitution. State Representative Mike Jones says the proposal would add more protections for the right to bear arms and would stop local governments from creating overreaching gun control measures.

The Andalusia Republican believes it would also provide tougher reviews by the courts. The Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence calls the proposal a gift to gun criminals.
Louisiana and Missouri voters have approved similar measures.
