WINFIELD, Ala. (WCBI) — An Alabama town is attracting attention from around the world after passing a controversial resolution. Here is what inspired the community to recognize God as the city owner.

The small town of Winfield, Alabama is known for its southern hospitality. Now, the city of 4,500 in Marion County is being noticed for its public stance on religion. Mayor Randy Price says he and others thought the town needed a change.

“I just felt like it was kind of looking and studying best way to try to get my point across of how I felt like things need to be going,” says Mayor Randy Price.

Last month, the five council members unanimously approved a resolution giving God ownership to the town.

Here is where Mayor Randy Price and his council members passed the resolution 1051 acknowledging God as the owner of the city of Winfield. Little did they know their small town resolution would have a nationwide impact.

“We got bombarded with emails from all over the country all kind of different states Oklahoma, California, Texas, Ohio,” says Mayor Price.

Mayor Price said he spent hours responding to emails and answering phone calls from those for and against the resolution.

The resolution has no impact of law.

Despite the controversy, many Winfield residents support the decision.

“I learned of the resolution at the council meeting when it was passed. As a christian, I support the fact that God created the earth and put us on here to look after the earth,” says Mike Watkins.

“There is a lot of people saying what we did was unconstitutional by forcing our beliefs or religion on people but that’s not how a resolution is. It just acknowledges not forcing anything on anybody. Everybody has their choice and freedom of speech and I don’t think we stopped out of those lines,” says Mayor Price.

The city has received formal complaints from the ACLU and the freedom from Religion Foundation but no legal action has been filed.

The Mayor received several emails from foreign countries as well.
