AMORY, Miss. (WCBI) — Amory High School students who have trouble getting to school and class on time may find themselves in Amory’s version of the popular movie “The Breakfast Club.”

At the suggestion of Principal Ken Byars, the school board may require students with excessive lateness to attend school on Saturdays. Under the current policy, students receive a warning for the first four tardies. After-school and in-school detention kicks in after that.

Under the new policy, in-school detention would be replaced by Saturday school, which would last 8 a.m. – 9 p.m. Byars says in-school takes kids away from valuable classroom time and that Saturday school is more of a deterrent.

The school board could finalize the policy at its meeting next week.
