MONROE COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI)-A 2nd grader in Monroe County received dozens of birthday presents last week, but they’re not for her.

She tells us what she plans to do with all of those gifts.

Eight year old, Madison Nevins of Hamilton is considered a hero at the Monroe County Sheriff’s office after her large donation of toys.

“Since I’m getting so much for my birthday and Christmas, I feel that I need to donate presents to little boys and girls who needed it,” says Madison Nevins.

Madison’s mother Brandy thought of the idea when she heard about the 3rd annual toy drive at the Monroe County Sheriff’s office.

Then, Madison used her 8th birthday to collect donations.

“She had a skating party and so we sent out to the whole second grade and family and friends and we asked them on the invitation to please not bring her a gift to bring her one to donate to a little boy or girl,” says Brandy Nevins.

Nearly 40 people showed up with presents, that’s more than five bags worth of donations.

Brandy says this was an opportunity to teach Madison how to give.

“Tis the season to give and that she needs to give to those who are a little less fortunate than her to see how blessed she is so she needs to share that blessing,” says Brandy Nevins.

Sheriff Cecil Cantrell sees a lot of bad things in his line of work, but he’s thankful to see Madison’s generosity and giving spirit.

“For her to have such a big heart to do what she did it’s just very touching and it really tells you the meaning about Christmas,” says Sheriff Cecil Cantrell.

Now, Madison is challenging others to make a difference in their community.

“I would say to donate toys to little boys and girls who need it,” says Madison Nevins.

As the toys are prepared for Monroe County boys and girls, Madison is already planning next year’s donation drive to be even bigger.

The Sheriff Office toy drive will end on December 16th and toys will be handed out on the 19th.
