COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — $67 million, that’s what Andarko Petroleum says it will spend to clean up the former Kerr McGee creosote plant site in Columbus. That figure was released today as Andarko, the parent company of Tronox and Kerr McGee, finalized a $5.15 billion settlement  with the Justice department.

The suit stemmed from cases nationwide where Kerr McGee or one of its branches polluted cities and communities. The Columbus case involves a creosote plant where ditches were used to transport waste water to the Luxapallila creek. When flood waters would hit, the toxic waste would then be spread throughout the neighborhood.

The settlement does not details exactly what cleanup steps will be funded or when that work would begin.
