JACKSON, Miss. (WCBI) — The likelihood of teachers seeing a pay raise from lawmakers is increasing. Lt. Governor, Tate Reeves, unveiled a plan today. Under the proposal, Mississippi teachers would see a $3,500 pay raise over the next 16 months.

The plan also calls for a School Recognition Program to be implemented in Fiscal Year 2017. It’s a merit based pay raise system. An educator would receive stipends worth as much as two thousand dollars, if the school’s academic rating improves. The House plan guarantees teachers a $1,500 raise by next year if educators have five years experience and if they meet certain benchmarks.

An agreement between the House and Senate will be needed before any raise can be signed into law.
