Video: Back to School is Big Business for Utility Companies

STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – School is back in session for many. Hundreds of college students are moving back to Starkville and area businesses are seeing an increase in business.

It’s officially August and that means on thing;back to school rushes are hitting businesses.

“Its also an exciting time because a lot of activity coming back into town, people are trying to set up their apartments, houses,” said Terry Kemp, with the Starkville Electric Dept.

Kemp says over the past few weeks, the company has seen a burst of phone calls and various service orders.

“We handled probably over 300 service orders and answered approximately 3,000 phone calls. So there is a lot of activity going on right now,” he said.

The period of transition from ending housing leases to beginning new one, brings customers into the electric department for more than general service information.

“A lot of it range from how do i get service to where your located, information about the community because in some cases, new students or families moving into Starkville, this is one of the first places they stop, so part of it is for direction,” he said.

Kemp says although there are longer days as a result of the business boom, it is all made possible by a team effort.

“We had a lot of folks involved. Its one of those times where that really becomes a priority, is to provide good service, timely, trying to meet expectations,” he said.
