COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – The long-awaited clean up of creosote-contaminated areas around the former Kerr McGee railroad tie plant in Columbus is a step closer. A federal bankruptcy appeals judge has signed off on a 5 .1 billion dollar settlement that calls for the new owners of the remnants of Kerr McGee to pay for cleanup at sites nationwide. The settlement means about 69 million dollars for Columbus. Barring appeals, the E-P-A and the trust established to oversee clean up can begin contamination investigation when the money becomes available early next year. That process could take two years and full clean up a decade. One of the first steps will be clean up of a ditch that runs along 14th Avenue North, new drainage and widening THE ROAD. The ditch clean up contract has not been awarded and the road widening won’t begin until that is completed.
